(BLOOMFIELD) - Four public figures in Greene County are taking on a challenge this month, one that many residents in Greene County face as a daily reality...hunger.

The Greene County Daily World reports Linton Mayor Tom Jones, Greene County Foundation Executive Director Kerry Conway, the Rev. Mike Roth and Pastor Warren Shake will spend this month living on what a family in poverty have allotted to them in food stamps...$40 per week.

The paper says Rev. Roth wanted to participate because he works at the local food bank, and that Lent seems to be a perfect time to "give something up."

Mayor Jones is a diabetic, and wants to see if someone with diabetes can eat nutritionally and stay healthy on $40 per week.

Ms. Conway wants to see if one can eat nutritionally, and will also live within the $867 per month income guidelines for the 4 week challenge, donating the savings to charity.

Finally, Pastor Shake says he is doing it to gain more compassion for those he helps.

The paper says Greene County is one of the most poverty stricken counties in the state of Indiana.
