(BEDFORD) - What started as a check on a suspicious looking vehicle at Oakland City University-Bedford this morning turned into a high speed chase police say involved plenty of booze and triple-digit speeds.
Bedford Police Chief Dennis Parsley tells WBIW News officers saw 19-year-old Shae Mullis pulling out of an Oakland City lot at 12:30 this morning, noticed he was driving odd and pulled him over at the Buehler's Buy-Low parking lot on 5th Street.
Officers gave Mullis a portable breath test which, Parsley says, he failed, and at that point he took off. Mullis led cops down 5th Street and turned south on IN-37, getting to speeds over 100mph, and then turned on Dixie Highway where cops decided to back off for safety reasons at 12:53am.
At 1:20am, a county officer found Mullis again at the Pride Estates Mobile Home Park where he fled again down Sandpit Road, north on IN-37 where a county and city cruiser boxed him in.
Mullis then turned on Shawnee Drive, and then onto 35th Street where he attempted to drive through a field and got stuck in the mud.
Police forcibly removed him from his car and took him to Dunn Memorial Hospital where they took an involuntary blood draw and a voluntary urine sample.
Mullis was then taken to Lawrence County jail facing at least 11 preliminary charges.
