Winter Weather Safety Tips

Last updated on Monday, February 2, 2009

(UNDATED) - Now that the state is blanketed in snow, Hoosiers who enjoy outdoor winter activities are out sledding, tubing, skiing and ice skating.

Angela Goldman with the state's Department of Natural Resource says regardless of the winter activity you enjoy, keep a few points in mind for your safety. Always let someone know where you are going and when you plan to return so they can check on you if you don't come back.

Cell phone service coverage is spotty in some areas, so you shouldn't depend entirely on that. It's better to take someone along with you so you can help each other if necessary.

Dress appropriately for your activity. Hypothermia is a dangerous condition, so take breaks whenever you feel too cold or get disoriented on the ice or snow.
