Last updated on Wednesday, February 4, 2009

(MITCHELL) - One seemingly spectacular accident yesterday morning in Mitchell sent two Ellettsville residents to the hospital.

Lawrence County police reports say 22-year-old Tanda Hilgemeier Smith of Ellettsville was heading north on IN-37 near Teke Burton Drive in Mitchell when she tried to pass in the left lane and lost control.

A witness told county officers smith started to move back into the right lane, then lost control of her Saturn, crossing all 4 lanes of IN-37, hit a snow bank, went airborne, landed upside down and slid down an embankment on its roof.

Smith was found bleeding severely from her head, and her passenger, 21-year-old Whitney Brown, also of Ellettsville, complained of back pain.

Both were taken to Dunn Memorial Hospital.
