Rumors Of Mayor's Arrest Appear Greatly Exaggerated

Last updated on Wednesday, February 18, 2009

(MITCHELL) - A local blog site has posted a rumor about Mitchell Mayor Dan Terrell, and, so far, it doesn’t seem to hold up.

The blog site mitchellnews.net, posted a rumor that Mayor Terrell had been arrested, or is at least under investigation, by Indiana state troopers for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated.

Lawrence County Sheriff Sam Craig, who is also in charge of the jail that Terrell would have been taken to had he been arrested, told WBIW News, "Mayor Terrell has not been incarcerated," and that the mayor had not come through his doors.

Indiana State Police Bloomington Sgt. Curt Durnil told WBIW News this afternoon, "Dan Terrell has not been arrested, repeat, he has not been arrested." Durnil then went on to explain that, had anyone, including Mayor Terrell, been pulled over for OWI and failed sobriety testing, that they would not have let him go, nor would they have let him go pending the results of lengthy blood-based toxicology tests.

The Bloomington ISP post covers Lawrence, Monroe, Greene, Owen and Brown Counties.

Indiana State Police Jasper's radio dispatch crew also reports no arrest of anyone by the name of Dan Terrell.

The Jasper ISP post covers Orange, Martin, Crawford, Perry, Spencer, Dubois and Daviess Counties.

Bedford Police Department logs have not shown any arrest made against Dan Terrell, and a renewed check through Mitchell Police Department logs, at least through February 10th, show no mention of Dan Terrell either, and a phone call to the department confirmed as much.

Phones went unanswered at the Mayor's office Tuesday afternoon, however, and messages left for clarification of this rumor have not been returned.
