IU Cites Family Opposition In Decision Not To Add Garrett Name To Gym

Last updated on Wednesday, February 25, 2009

(BLOOMINGTON) - Indiana University has decided not to add the name of Hoosier basketball great William Garret to the Ora Wildermuth Gymnasium, in part, because Garrett’s family did not approve.

IU officials say they originally thought they had the blessing of the Garrett Family to use the name, however, after speaking with them, realized that was not the case.

The Wildermuth name change was a topic of discussion after the IU student newspaper, the Indiana Daily Student, published comments made by former trustee Ora Wildermuth in support of segregation.

Garrett's name was suggested as he was the first African-American member of the Hoosier varsity basketball squad, and played ball in that very gym.
