(BLOOMINGTON) - It's a common mantra in modern political circles, that the so-called "mainstream media" has a bias in favor of liberals and/or Democrats.

However, two IU professors, and the book they just published, say "not so fast."

IU professors Maria Grabe and Erik Bucy's new book, Image Bite Politics: News and the Visual Framing of Elections, says that network newscasts on CBS, NBC and ABC actually favored Republicans, when you analyze content.

Grabe and Bucy analyzed more than 60 hours of newscasts from the 1992, 1996, 2000 and 2004 elections, and found that they way that opposing presidential candidates were shown favored the Grand-Ol-Partier.

One possible explanation they offer, is the possibility that journalists are so tired of being accused of a liberal bias that they tend to give Republicans the benefit of the doubt more often.
