BPD Officer Commended For Helping Family With Broken Window, No Heat

Last updated on Tuesday, February 10, 2009

(BEDFORD) - A Bedford police officer was recognized at last night’s board of works meeting for going above and beyond the call of duty.

Bedford Police Chief Dennis Parsley says Officer Mike Johnson, BPD's only K-9 trainer, was called for a welfare check to a home on the south side of town, where he found children freezing inside a home with a broken out window.

Johnson contacted Bedford Glass and got them to replace the window free of charge, and then talked with Hoosier Uplands to help the family get their gas turned back on for heat.

While they were waiting for heat to return, Johnson returned to his home, retrieved a couple space heaters, and lent them to the family to keep warm.

Mayor Shawna Girgis presented a letter of commendation to Johnson last night, but Johnson received another show of appreciation as well, a hug from the children's grandmother.
