(UNDATED) - A couple of ice-related tragedies over the weekend prompted the DNR to issue a safety warning to minimize the risks associated with ice fishing and other ice-related activities.
DNR Law Enforcement Spokesman Lt. Mark Farmer says you can never be too careful on the ice.
He says there is no such thing as safe ice, only safer ice. The DNR says 4 inches of new clear ice is recommended for foot travel, if you go by snowmobile or ATV, 5 inches is the minimum. Also, wear a life jacket under your winter gear.
It not only will keep you buoyant should you fall through, but also will provide additional warmth.
