(UNDATED) - State police are still on the hunt for dangerous drivers over the holidays.

State Police Sgt. Curt Durnil in Bloomington says there were 9 fatalities last year over the holiday period, and they are working to reduce that number this year.

The holiday counting period, as they call it, will be from December 24th through the 29th for Christmas, and December 31st to January 5th for New Year's.

Police recommend making sure you're rested up before hitting the road, increase your following distance, especially if the roads aren't dry, wear your seatbelt, of course, and let somebody else know the route you're taking.

That way, if you get lost or slide off the road, somebody outside the car will know along what roads to look for you.

Police realize it's hard to enjoy a happy holiday season when you're either in the hospital, in a ditch, or in the clink.
