Lawrence County Unemployment Up

Last updated on Monday, December 22, 2008

(BEDFORD) - Lawrence County unemployment continues its negative trend along with the rest of the nation.

In November of this year, unemployment jumped in the county from 9.2% to 9.9%, keeping us in the top 5 for worst unemployment in the state.

184 Lawrence County residents were added to the unemployment rolls while 174 were actually added to the labor force of the county.

And, while Lawrence is within the top 5 in the state, we're also one of only two counties in the immediate listening area, the other being Crawford at #23, to even be within the top 50%.

The next closest is Orange County which ranks at #48 with 6.5% unemployment. Two of our other neighbors, Martin and Monroe Counties, are in the bottom 10 for unemployment rankings.

The best county? That's nearby Dubois at only 4.2%.

The State of Indiana has jumped from 6.4% in October to 7.1% in November, a huge spike, especially compared to the 4.5% we stood at in November of last year.

The US has climbed from 6.5% to 6.7%, a full two points higher than last year.
