Ice Covered Road Causes Bus Crash In Owen County

Last updated on Friday, December 19, 2008

(OWEN COUNTY) - Yesterday morning Indiana State Police troopers from the Bloomington post responded to a school bus crash on Owen Park Road, west of US 231, north of Spencer.

Preliminary investigation revealed that Shannon McGuire, 39, of Greencastle, was the driver of a Cloverdale Community School Corporation school bus carrying 17 student passengers, ranging in age from kindergarten to 10th grade.

The bus was northbound on Owen Park Road and began down a hill that had a curve.

Due to the ice covered road, as the bus started down the hill, the bus turned sideways, blocking both lanes of traffic.

The bus then continued northbound, down the hill, striking a tree on the west edge of the roadway toward the rear of the bus.

Once the bus struck the tree, it ricocheted back into the northbound lane, coming to final rest on the east side of the roadway.

Eight of the seventeen students were transported to a Putnam County Hospital for treatment.

Information on injuries was relayed as minor cuts and lacerations.
