Homeland Security Recommends Winter Survival Kit

Last updated on Friday, December 26, 2008

(UNDATED) - A winter survival kit for your car is something you think you’ll never need until you do. Then you’ll be glad you took the time to put it together.

You probably have most of the items already, they're just not packed in the car yet.

John Erickson with the Indiana Department of Homeland Security recommends packing a flashlight with extra batteries, a couple of blankets and some sand or cat litter for added traction when you're stuck.

Also, pack some high-calorie snacks like peanut butter crackers or granola bars, water or juice in a thermos to prevent freezing.

A good ice scraper, snow brush and a small steel shovel are essential for winter, but it's also a good idea to have emergency flares, jumper cables and a car charger for your cell phone.

You can also buy a first aid kit to keep in the car.
