(BEDFORD) - The first part of a big, important, Christmas present has arrived at the Bedford Police Department this morning.

Out front of the station around 8:00am this morning, a North American Van Lines truck was waiting to deliver new furniture to the police station, for the department's new radio dispatch system.

Bedford Assistant Chief Dan Kirk tells WBIW News the department paid for the furniture out of its own pocket, but the new radio equipment, up to the state-mandated 800mhz frequency standard, is all paid for by Emergency Management and E-911 grants.

Bedford has two dispatcher consoles in the department, and to replace each one, Kirk says, will cost about $25,000 just for the equipment, not to mention the portable and car radios.

Radio company ECS is expected to deliver the actual radio equipment, most likely, in the first part of next week.

No interruptions in radio service for the department are expected.
