(UNDATED)- How bad will this winter be in Indiana? It's a question often asked of the National Weather Service.

The answer points to a warmer winter than usual, but forecasters will not guess how much snowfall we will see.

This year the big factor will be the absence of el Nino or la Nina at the start of winter. However, a weak La Nina is expected to develop by January.

La Nina is a term used to describe normal values across the Pacific Ocean.

La Nina happens, on average, every three to five years. An average Indiana winter has highs in the 30s, lows in the teens and temperatures dropping to zero or below about ten times.
