Sun Glare, Speed Blamed For Car, Train Wreck Near Mitchell

Last updated on Tuesday, October 14, 2008

(MITCHELL) - An Arizona man had an unfortunate run-in with a train in Mitchell Sunday afternoon.

Lawrence County reports say Michael Barnes of Golden Valley, Arizona was clipping along Yockey Road approaching a railroad crossing too fast when he says he was blinded by sun glare, and when he crossed the tracks, was struck on the passenger side by an Indiana Railroad locomotive pulling 27 other cars.

The train was going about 25 miles per hour at the time of the wreck, and appears to have just clipped the corner so the car wasn't dragged. Barnes was not injured, neither was the engineer, 53-year-old Mark Brown of Jasonville.

However, Barnes' 9-year-old passenger Zach Webb of Mitchell, suffered minor facial injuries.
