Inmate Found Hanged In Lawrence County Jail

Last updated on Tuesday, October 7, 2008

(BEDFORD) - A Springville man arrested Friday night was found hanged in the Lawrence County Jail’s detox cell.

The Lawrence County Coroner's report says Lester Tipton Jr. was arrested on drunk driving charges Friday and lodged in the detox center of the Lawrence County Security Center.

Late Friday night, jail staff found Tipton with his shirt around his neck, unresponsive.

Officers tried to revive Tipton, while a Dunn Memorial Hospital ambulance was en route, but, at 12:50am Saturday morning, Tipton was pronounced dead at Dunn.

Lawrence County Coroner John Sherill says the official cause of death was hanging in a manner consistent with suicide.
