(BLOOMINGTON) - A Monroe County Sheriff’s deputy is dead after being struck by a car on IN-45.
State Police Bloomington says Deputy Sara Jones was directing traffic late Friday night at an unrelated incident on IN-45 west of Bloomington when she was struck by a Jeep driven by a 16-year-old Bloomington girl.
Police say 16-year-old Bree Myers struck Jones with the left front of her Jeep causing multiple injuries, so Jones was flown to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis where she later succumbed to her injuries yesterday. Myers was taken to Bloomington Hospital though she wasn't injured.
Police shut down IN-45 until they could reconstruct the scene of the wreck.
Monroe County Sheriff Jim Kennedy told the Bloomington Herald Times that Jones just signed on to the department in February, and she is the first officer in the history of the department to die in the line of duty.
