Bartholomew County Coping With Loss Of Public Officials In Fire

Last updated on Friday, October 24, 2008

(COLUMBUS)- Bartholomew County residents are trying to come to terms with the death of two of its public servants.

Auditor Nancy McKinney and her husband, former three-term Sheriff Jimmie McKinney, died in a house fire Wednesday in their Newbern, Indiana home. Both died from smoke inhalation.

Local elected officials are reacting to the deaths. County Clerk Tami Hines says both the auditor and her husband will be sorely missed by the community.

Sheriff Mark Gorbett worked under Jimmie McKinney when McKinney was sheriff and says he totally believed in law enforcement.
