Sunday Wreck Totals Stolen Vehicle, Takes Out Power Lines

Last updated on Wednesday, September 17, 2008

(EAST OOLITIC) - If power companies didn’t have enough problems with power lines getting knocked over by storms on Sunday, they also had the driver of a stolen vehicle to deal with in East Oolitic.

Lawrence County police reports say 18-year-old Matthew Johnson of Bedford rolled a Pontiac Sunfire onto its side in East Oolitic, the car already having been listed as stolen from Mitchell.

During the wreck, the car also happened to take out several power lines and a gas meter, causing a gas leak and totaling the vehicle.

Nobody in the car was injured, but Johnson is preliminarily charged with false and fictitious registration, drunk driving and illegal consumption.

The Mitchell Police Department is currently investigating the vehicle theft.
