Passerby Saves Jackson County Man From Accident, Truck Fire

Last updated on Monday, September 15, 2008

(FREETOWN) - A passerby pulled a man from his burning vehicle following a head-on collision Saturday afternoon in northwest Jackson County.

55-year-old Steven Schmick of Freetown was transported to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis with spinal and leg injuries after police say his truck crossed the centerline and hit an SUV driven by 45-year-old Sheila Blake of Norman.

Schmick's truck burst into flames after the crash.

That's when Kirbie Cockerham of Norman stopped and helped pull Schmick out of the truck's back window.

Sheila Blake and her daughter Sarah, who was a passenger in the SUV, were treated at a medical center in Seymour.
