Odon Woman Loses More Than $8k In Scam

Last updated on Thursday, September 25, 2008

(ODON) - Fraud schemes targeted at Hoosiers continue to cost victims thousands of dollars.

In Odon, Vivian Evans is one of those people who is out a hefty sum of money. State police say Evans was contacted by a scam artist pretending to be an attorney saying she had won a contest, but that Evans needed to send money to cover processing and delivery.

The amount of money needed? Well, overall, Evans is out more than $8,100 dollars.

State police are investigating, however, there's a tip to avoid such a scam. If you ever win any contest, lottery, drawing or anything else that sends you money or a prize, the contest operator cannot require you to send them money, for any reason.

Remember, if they're sending you a cash prize, they can more easily take money out of the prize to cover costs than they can get you to send it to them.
