Lights Out On Lawrence County, Area Cleans Up After Storms

Last updated on Monday, September 15, 2008

(BEDFORD) - Most of the State of Indiana, including the entire WBIW listening area, is digging out from last weekend’s storms in one way or another.

Duke Energy has reported nearly 300,000 total power outages throughout their service area in Indiana.

Bedford, Bloomington and Columbus saw heavy damage to power grids, and still, Lawrence County has more than 4,000 duke customers in the dark, Monroe County has around 11,000 and Orange just over 1,100.

Additionally, the Orange County REMC reports all of their primary lines are up, but several substations are down, and they don't have an expected time for repairs to be complete. Jackson County REMC reports as many as 8,000 customers out of juice as of 10:30pm last night, with 5 substations being offline.

Both organizations are working to restore power as quickly as possible.

Also, power problems have caused Shoals Community Schools to be on a 2-hour delay, and Medora Community Schools and Lincoln, Fayetteville and Springville Elementary Schools in North Lawrence to close.
