Birch Bayh Speaks To Packed House At IU

Last updated on Friday, September 26, 2008

(BLOOMINGTON) - Former Senator Birch Bayh spoke to a packed house at the IU Law School Moot Court Room yesterday afternoon.

The speech, hosted by the American Constitution Society, was centered around the separation between church and state, which was an issue he said came across his Senate desk frequently during his tenure between 1963 and 1980.

On one instance he said he caught a lot of heat over, was a prayer amendment which was coming from controversies in three states.

He said he would have been pleased for his children to say any of the prayers proposed for codification, but that he was offended that government would make his children say them in school.
