(UNDATED) - A study of a possible Bloomington-to-Muncie rail service concludes it won’t work financially unless there are stops in smaller communities such as Mooresville or Southport along the way.
Legislators have gotten a sneak peek at the report. Bloomington Representative Matt Pierce says there are two possible corridors from Bloomington to Indy, and two more possible routes for the Indy-to-Muncie leg. All the routes would go through bedroom communities surrounding Indianapolis in hopes of driving up ridership.
Pierce says several of the proposals would use existing track -- that would make building the lines quicker and cheaper. He says even the largest estimate to build a line with all-new track is less than $400-million dollars.
A final report is due to lawmakers by the end of next week.
