(BLOOMINGTON) - The state police from the Bloomington Post are trying to keep area Hoosiers safe from scams floating about the internet.
State police investigators say the biggest step to avoiding scams and fraud is recognizing conjobs in the first place.
Police say most scams involve inquiries from people far away, sometimes from other countries, involving wire services or certified checks and money orders, or refusing or being unable to meet in person prior to conducting a transaction.
And, especially when dealing with people on loosely-regulated commerce sites like eBay and CraigsList, try to deal locally with people you can actually meet and for products you can actually see, touch and even smell if desired.
Of course, never give out personal information, regardless of how harmless you think it may be. Sometimes thieves have most of the info they need to rip you off, but just need a couple details.
Finally, always remember, if it seems too good to be true...it's probably not true!
