(BLOOMINGTON) - Bloomington police are continuing their investigation into the death of a Bloomington man and the injury of one other near the Marsh grocery store west of IN-37 on 3rd Street.

Bloomington's Captain Joe Qualters tells WBIW News the investigation started around 3:30 yesterday morning. So far, police say 51-year-old William Cline was found with multiple stab wounds and was taken to Bloomington Hospital where he later died.

An autopsy has been scheduled in Terre Haute at 1:00 this afternoon so as to determine if his death was the result of his injuries, or the result of an underlying medical condition.

Qualters says it is currently too early in the investigation to say concretely whether his death was the result of a criminal act.

The other person involved, a 42-year-old man, was treated for injuries in the altercation as well, however, police have not made any arrests, and an active investigation continues.

Update 8/8/2008 10:03am:
Bloomington PD's Captain Joe Qualters tells WBIW News this morning that the autopsy, scheduled for this afternoon, will be the bulk of the investigative work in this case.

Qualters says the other man, who survived the incident, gave police one story of events, and the autopsy is primarily intended to see if his story can be corroborated, or if there will be any "surprises."

If the 42-year-old man's story checks out, Qualters says it looks like a self-defense situation, and the investigation would continue as a "death investigation," as opposed to a "homicide investigation."
