Buyer Presents Medals In Bedford, Ackerson Takes A Swipe

Last updated on Tuesday, August 12, 2008

(BEDFORD) - Indiana 4th District Republican Congressman Steve Buyer was in town yesterday to help present awards to a few Lawrence County Vietnam War and World War II veterans.

William Earl of Mitchell was presented with the Bronze Star and the Presidential Unit Citation amongst others for his service during World War II.

Roy Hitchkock of Mitchell was presented with the Purple Heart and others for his service during Vietnam.

Finally, Alma Ashley of Bedford and Flo Beyers of Bloomfield accepted posthumous awards on behalf of their brother, Wilbur Evans of Bedford, including the Bronze Star and Purple Heart for his service in World War II.

Buyer said he was honored to present the awards to these men and their family.

However, in what is becoming almost commonplace during an increasingly heated congressional campaign in the 4th District, around the time Buyer finished his presentation, Democratic challenger Nels Ackerson sent out a statement criticizing Buyer for not having accepted a debate yet, and accusing him of trying to turn one potential public debate in Hendricks County into a private, invitation-only dinner.
