(BEDFORD) - Bedford police officers have two Kentuckians in custody for a Saturday morning robbery at Hobby’s Inn in Bedford.
Bedford Police Chief Dennis Parsley tells WBIW News 52-year-old Larry Teague of Covington, Kentucky, and 48-year-old Mark Randolph of Independence, Kentucky, are in Lawrence County jail facing charges of robbery, possession of stolen property and public intoxication.
Bedford police officers allege Teague and Randolph entered Hobby's and ordered food, and sat around in the restaurant long enough to raise suspicions. Then, Teague and Randolph reportedly changed their order with the waitress, who then went back into the kitchen to pass along the order, but when she turned around, she allegedly saw one of the men getting into the restaurant's safe. When spotted, both took off running out of the building.
The panic alarm was activated and 911 was called, notifying Bedford police what had happened, however, the call was cut short so, Parsley says, officers had to enter the situation "flying blind," not knowing if any of the men involved were armed.
Officers would quickly locate Teague in the woods near the restaurant and take him into custody, but they had trouble locating Randolph. However, they did locate a stolen 1993 Cadillac at a nearby doctor's office parking lot from Independence, Kentucky, where Randolph was from, and took that in.
Around that time, Lawrence County Sheriff Sam Craig tells WBIW News he was filling up his unmarked patrol vehicle while helping out with his department's prescription drug pickup program. When he reentered his vehicle, he heard the radio traffic from Bedford Police over his radio, and headed over to the area to see if he could help out.
When Craig got near the area, he says he saw a man that matched the description of Randolph run across Mitchell Road toward the railroad tracks near George's Gateway.
Craig says he thought it was likely Randolph could steal another car and escape, so he kept an eye on him and radioed his location to Bedford officers, who would then apprehend him.
Parsley says it was good police work coupled with assistance from Sheriff Craig that allowed the entire situation to be wrapped up, with both men in custody, by 11:40am, less than a half hour after the initial 911 call.
Police also found a bag, allegedly ditched by Randolph, with items from the Hobby's safe including lottery tickets and less than $300 cash.
