Stone City, German American, Other Bank Customers Targeted In Scam

Last updated on Monday, July 28, 2008

(BEDFORD) - The Bedford Chamber of Commerce is getting the word out of a phone scam circulating throughout the area.

Reports have been coming into the Chamber of people receiving phone calls from people who are purporting to be employees of the Stone City Bank.

These calls, going mostly to cell phones, are telling people their debit cards have been suspended and they have to call an 800 number to turn it back on.

The phone number is a scam number according to officials at the stone city bank, and that customers should not call this number.

It is what is called a "phishing" scam, where when you call the number, you enter all your information to the con-artists and, instead of turning your card back on, so to speak, they are stealing your information.

Additionally, according to State Police Jasper, other calls and now text messages have been going out to German American, Citizens State and 1st State Bank customers.

If you have been contacted about this, and especially if you have already called the number, call either Bedford police at 275-3311 or Lawrence County police at 275-3316.
