Indy Man's Corvette Chased Down By ISP Mustang At 127mph

Last updated on Tuesday, July 29, 2008

(WAVERLY) - When an Indianapolis man kicked his 1989 teal Corvette into high gear cresting triple digits on IN-37 near Martinsville, he wasn’t quite ready for the surprise the Mustang in his rearview would give him.

Instead of a race, it gave him the "cherries and berries." Indiana State Police Putnamville officials say their recently issued 2008 Mustang GT patrol car was out on the hunt when a Corvette blasted by at a clocked speed of 127 miles per hour.

In the state police release, Trooper Dustin Starnes, who was assigned to the Mustang, said he didn't even have to clock the 'Vette to know he was going well over the 60mph posted limit.

Starnes says chasing after the Corvette, driven by 60-year-old Austin Chapin of Indianapolis, was the fastest he's ever gotten his ponycar up to during service. Chapin was charged with speeding 127 in a 60 and driving while suspended.

His steed was impounded and the tickets could be worth $500 a pop.
