Gas Price Spike Causes IU To Cut Back Bus Service This Year

Last updated on Tuesday, July 29, 2008

(BLOOMINGTON) - You’re not the only one feeling the gas crunch, now even bus riders are getting scaled back on in Bloomington.

The Indiana University campus bus service has seen diesel prices climb 85% year over year, and are now having to cut back on services in order to make up the difference.

Now, IU bus riders will see service on the A, B, D, E and X routes end at 11:00pm instead of midnight during the week.

The U route is being eliminated and will be served by the A and B. Friday service is getting cut back 16% and weekend service by 61%. Summer routes will see the axe to the tune of 32% and break and holiday service hours will be biggest hit at 73%.

Overall, the IU bus service is cutting routes and services by 19% across the board, and that's even after the 2.3% mandatory fee increase.

All these changes go into effect at the beginning of the academic year toward the end of next month.
