(BEDFORD) - Alcohol is being blamed for yesterday's fiery, fatal accident on US-50 that left a Mitchell man dead.
Bedford police reports say beer cans were found throughout the accident site, however, intoxicant tests results are still pending.
The report corrects the position of the accident to the US-50 ramp onto Mitchell Road, initially the accident was reported on IN-37. 40-year-old Robert Hicks of Mitchell was reportedly eastbound on the ramp when he lost control, overcorrected, and rolled his truck after striking a rock.
A witness, Peggy Wellman of Paoli, was southbound on the ramp shortly after and was the first witness to the accident, and placed the initial 911 call. The report says Wellman didn't see the actual accident take place.
When responding officers arrived, they found an inverted pickup truck smoking heavily, and couldn't see inside the passenger cabin to see if anyone was inside due to the smoke.
The officer yelled for a response from anybody inside but got none, and that's when the truck reportedly burst into flames.
When the Bedford Fire Department arrived to extinguish the fire, that's when they found Hicks inside, trapped and deceased.
Bedford officers are still conducting an investigation.
