Semi Goes Up In Flames On IN-37 In Morgan County

Last updated on Wednesday, June 11, 2008

(WAVERLY) - These past few days, when it comes to IN-37 through Morgan County, when it rains, it pours…and then it catches fire.

Indiana State Police from the Putnamville Post say they responded to a call of a blazing semi tractor on northbound IN-37 around 5:00pm yesterday, and, not even a day after the northbound lanes had reopened due to receding flood waters, they had to close them again to put out the truck.

Reports say the driver, 37-year-old Reed Thompson of Whiteland, Indiana felt a burning sensation on the right side of his body, and when he turned to look, he found a fire!

Investigators suspect the fire was caused by a discarded cigarette butt. Firefighters were able to save the box trailer with only minor paint damage, but the tractor essentially burned to the ground, and is a total loss.

Thompson was able to get out in time, and only suffered 1st and 2nd degree burns to his right arm.
