(LYONS) - With major thoroughfares still closed in Greene County from this month's flooding, smaller county roads are taking a beating due to rerouted traffic.

According to a report published in the Greene County Daily World, Greene County deputies have been patrolling CR200 South and CR300 South and CR600 West near Lyons, which are the main unofficial detour roads for IN-57, watching for both traffic violators and roadway damage.

According to the report, Greene County Highway Superintendent Basil Shepherd says the roads are taking inordinate amounts of damage since the beds underneath them are still soft from being flooded themselves.

The biggest problem has been semis and other heavy trucks using the county roads as a route around IN-57 to get to IN-67, but now officers are cracking down, and the problem is improving.

Highway officials are now installing more visible detour signs routing traffic from IN-54 to US-231 to IN-58.

IN-57 is expected to remain closed through August.
