Utility Offers Reward For Copper Thieves

Last updated on Thursday, May 29, 2008

(BLOOMINGTON) - Seen some stolen copper? Well, knowing who stole it may be worth more to you than it is worth to the thief to recycle it.

Hoosier Energy and South Central Indiana REMC are holding up a $5,000 check for anyone who knows who made off with copper wire from one of their power stations over Memorial Day weekend.

Over the weekend, thieves did about $4,500 dollars worth of damage to the Dolan substation in Monroe County, though that's not even close to the $50,000 in damage they did at the end of January.

What's even more potentially costly than the equipment that's damaged is the fact that repairing it could be a life-threatening task for crews.

Monroe County Sheriff's detectives ask anyone with information on these thefts to call (800) 456-1096 and hey, that might just mean a check for 5-large made out in your name.
