(BLOOMINGTON) - A Monroe County deputy has been forced to retire after 29 years of service due to allegations of misconduct.
According to a report published by the Bloomington Herald Times, Deputy Ted Baugh was forced out by the Merit Board, after his response to charges by Sheriff Jim Kennedy came in too late to be heard.
Kennedy charged Baugh derelicted his duties, was unable to perform and was emotionally unstable.
The newspaper report says Baugh reportedly punched himself in the face several times after he drove his cruiser into deep water last year, didn't have a home phone until this past February, lived in a couple tents, his car and the Monroe County Airport after his home was lost to fire, and was once photographed sleeping behind the county garage in someone else's patrol car.
Sheriff Kennedy told the merit board that, "Ted sleeps periodically."
The crowd in attendance, after the dismissal, became verbally upset at the board and Sheriff Kennedy and, reportedly, one man had to be forcibly removed.
No arrests were made.
