(JASPER) - Tuesday's primary elections and Indianapolis 500 trials weren't the only races going on throughout the state.
State Police Jasper say a New Albany man led law enforcement officers on a chase that started from a burglary in Floyd County, continued through Harrison County and the officers lost sight of the man in Orange County.
A Jasper state trooper would then spot the same vehicle in Haysville, just north of Jasper, an hour or so later, and when the officer got out to approach the driver, he would take off again, leading troopers, Dubois County deputies and Jasper city cops on another chase that, after a few successful spike strip deployments, would wind up stopping when the driver, 33-year-old Louis Newkirk, hit a bench in front of a church.
But he would then take off running, causing officers to chase after him and deploy a Taser, which would bring the chase to a screeching halt.
Newkirk was taken to Dubois County jail charged with a felony count of resisting arrest by vehicle, and lesser charges of reckless driving, attempted battery on an officer, criminal recklessness, and two counts each of resisting arrest, criminal mischief and leaving the scene of a crash.
