Fire Damages Two Bedford Houses This Morning

Last updated on Wednesday, May 14, 2008

(BEDFORD) - Bedford firefighters were at the scene of a pair of houses on fire early this morning, and are trying to determine the cause.

Bedford Fire Department Chief Scott Gillespie told WBIW News this morning that firefighters responded to a call at the 1600 block of F Street shortly after 1:30 this morning, and arrived to find half of a vacant house ablaze.

Gillespie says the heat from the first fire caused the house next door to catch as well, and so the 10 firemen that responded had two blazes to battle.

The first house was unoccupied and suffered heavy structural damage, though the owner and any potential occupants are currently unknown.

The second house, that of Kelly and Gerald Baker, caught fire because of the first house, and suffered damage to the exterior and attic, however, Gillespie says he is unsure as to the total amount of damage done.

Investigators are trying to determine the cause of the first fire since there were no utilities were turned on, and they are unsure as to whether or not the building was secured prior to the fire.

Two firefighters suffered minor injuries in the fight, one with an injured wrist and one with a minor burn, but both stayed on scene to assist and are expected to be back at 100% within the next day or two.

One possible culprit for causing the fire may be last night's storms, which, if that were the case, would make two houses lost to fire so far this year.

Bedford police had to re-route traffic for a while on 16th St. near the fire, however, currently, all lanes are reported as clear.
