(MARTINSVILLE) - Usually a lousy day fishing at the river involves pulling more weeds and junk out of the river than fish, but even on the lousiest day fishing, one rarely thinks they will pull a potential bomb out of the water.
But that's what happened to a Martinsville man Thursday. State police Putnamville report 53-year-old Ed Blakley of Martinsville had tossed his line into the White River in Morgan County and pulled out a soft-sided cooler, about the size of a six-pack of cans.
When he opened it, however, police say what found looked like an improvised explosive device.
Police say Blakley did exactly what he was supposed to do and called police who dispatched the state Explosive Ordnance Team to the location, and determined the device was a fake.
However, the investigation involved shutting down IN-39 between Morgan Street and IN-67. Police say the making of a fake explosive device is a Class-D felony in Indiana.
No arrests have been made.
