Young Daughter Of Congressional Candidate Dies In Accident

Last updated on Thursday, April 24, 2008

(JASPER) - The 4-year-old daughter of a Jasper congressional candidate is dead after an accident yesterday afternoon.

Jasper police say 4-year-old Demiah Bottorff, daughter of John R. Bottorff who is running in the Democratic primary against incumbent Congressman Baron Hill, was struck by an automobile at the Jasper K-Mart.

Police say 89-year-old Jerome Klein of Jasper was backing out of a parking spot at the same time the family was walking across the now empty stall, however, reports say Klein neglected to correct his steering to get into the driving lane, and instead, re-entered the parking spot and, to make things worse, mistakenly hit the gas pedal instead of the brake when he saw the people in front of him.

Jasper police responded to a call of a child trapped under a vehicle and, though they freed 4-year-old Demiah, she would not survive her injuries.

Her father, John Bottorff, told WBIW News that, though it was an unfortunate accident, he's told it was a quick, painless death.

Klein was taken to Memorial Hospital in Jasper for blood tests which are required after such an accident.

So far, no charges have been filed though the investigation continues.
