(BEDFORD) - The Bedford Police Department is taking steps to alert area residents of a number of scams floating about Bedford and Lawrence County.
Most of these scams come through e-mail, though it's not always the case. But from lotteries you have won from "East Outer Mongolia," to distant relatives who have turned out to be both royalty and dead, to assassination plots by weak-kneed supposed killers, scam artists are getting more and more creative.
However, the success of their scam is entirely predicated on your cooperation, because they're fishing for your information: social security numbers, bank account numbers or any other bits and pieces of personal information they are looking for that they can use to hose you down.
One of the more interesting ones is e-mails telling you that you've either won a prize or, for some other reason, require FBI or other law enforcement protection, and they want you to send in money to assist in the case. That's simply silly because law enforcement already works with your money...taxes!
Bedford Police Chief Dennis Parsley says, simply enough, if you're unsure about any sort of online transaction, don't complete it.
