Woman Allegedly Kicks Officers During Blood Draw After OWI Arrest

Last updated on Monday, March 10, 2008

(BEDFORD) - A Bedford woman was pulled over for drunk driving this morning, and wound up with a number of charges from what happened after the stop.

Bedford Police Chief Dennis Parsley tells WBIW News that 35-year-old Melanie Jean Abalos of Bedford was pulled over at 5th and J Streets after turning the wrong way on J at 6th Street.

The report says Abalos showed signs of intoxication and performed poorly on a field sobriety test. When officers got her back to the station for a breath test, however, police allege Abalos got combative and refused the test.

A warrant was issued for a blood draw and Abalos was taken to Dunn Memorial Hospital for that and, at Dunn, she allegedly became physically combative, kicking two officers forcing them and hospital staff to forcibly restrain her.

Abalos would eventually be taken to Lawrence County jail charged with operating while intoxicated, going the wrong way on a 1 way street, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest by force and 2 counts of battery on an officer.
