Snow Causing Problems On Roadways

Last updated on Friday, March 7, 2008

(BEDFORD) - The snow so far has generated some dangerous conditions out on the roads.

The snow we are getting is thin and wet, and is getting blown around very easily by these winds we have.

Several school districts, including North Lawrence and Mitchell, have elected to dismiss schools early and several other businesses and organizations have either decided to close early or cancel events.

Lawrence County Highway Superintendant Dan Lucas tells WBIW News his crews are working hard on the hills and other treacherous areas primarily to make sure the school buses can run their routes safely.

Bedford Street Department Manager John Dalton has told WBIW News that there's definitely problems on roads that appear to be partially clear.

Dalton says the problem is that, with the snow being as wet as it is, tires are melting snow on the roads, but then that melted snow is turning into ice which is difficult to see.

Both Lucas and Dalton say they have enough sand and salt available to take care of this storm at the least. The Bedford crews have about 300 tons of sand and salt mix, and another 15 to 20 tons of salt to mix up if needed.

Either way, if you can stay home, we highly suggest doing so, otherwise, drive very carefully, give yourself plenty of extra distance to stop, and keep your gas tank full.

The extra weight of the gas in your tank will provide extra traction.
