(BLOOMINGTON) - Bloomington police are investigating the death of a man found near the intersection of 10th and Cottage Grove.
Bloomington's Captain Joe Qualters says a 40 or 50-year-old African American male was found late yesterday morning by a passerby, who then had a business call 911.
Officers arrived and remained on scene until around 3:30 in the afternoon collecting evidence.
At 5:00am this morning, Captian Qualters released an update including the identity of the victim and the names of 3 people arrested in connection. The man found was tentatively identified as 44-year-old Gene Davis of Bloomington.
At this point, police say Davis was stabbed several times in the chest as well as a knife wound to the neck area.
Right now, people arrested include 27-year-old Jodie Reeves who is charged with murder and obstruction of justice, 27-year-old Jennifer Hardimann charged with assisting a criminal and obstruction of justice, and 52-year-old Roger Edwards charged with theft and possession of marijuana.
Official cause of death for Davis is yet to be determined; his autopsy is set for 8:00 this morning. Bloomington police are currently saying the murder was the result of a physical argument over crack cocaine.
Reports so far say Reeves allegedly stabbed Davis in a van, and then chased him down 10th Street when he fled. After the incident, Reeves and Hardimann went to the home of Edwards, who was Reeves' boyfriend where they allegedly removed their clothing and burned it in a wood burning stove.
Detectives went to the Edwards home to locate Reeves, and Edwards reportedly indicated to the office he had suspicions due to blood being found in his van, which Reeves and Hardimann had been using.
Reeves apparently had a cut on her hand and reportedly told Edwards a story about it that he didn't think added up.
Detectives then obtained a search warrant for the home where they found a small amount of marijuana and a knife believed to be the murder weapon as well as other evidence from ashes in the stove.
Edwards also told police he had taken Reeves to the hospital to have her cut looked at and, police say, he admitted to having taken a Novocain syringe while there, resulting in the theft charge.
The case remains under investigation and we will bring you additional details as they become available.
