NWS: Flooding Could Be As Bad As May 1996 (With Road List)

Last updated on Thursday, March 20, 2008

(BEDFORD) - Area flooding continues throughout the WBIW listening area, and it’s looking to possibly get worse, as the rain that has already passed us drains into rivers and streams and flows our way.

The National Weather Service has issued a general flood warning for Lawrence, Martin, Monroe, Jackson, Greene and Brown Counties, and the state of emergency continues in Orange County, according to the Indiana Department of Homeland Security.

Additionally, flood warnings for areas along the East Fork of the White River have been, in some areas, extended until further notice.

In Bedford, the flood warning goes through Saturday evening, and the water level is forecasted to top out at 32.3 feet. With only two more tenths of a foot in Bedford, residents near the river may not just experience a wet basement, but possibly a wet living room, especially around Fort Ritner, and the lower areas of East Oolitic.

In Williams, IN-450 is already flooded which means the main way in and out of Williams is Ridge Road, and extensive flooding continues near Chase Ripple and Palestine.

In Shoals, water levels are supposed to crest over the 28-foot danger level, which the NWS estimates will at least grab the attention of most of Martin County. Some residents, especially in low lying mobile homes, may need to relocate.

The National Weather Service also estimates around 70% of Jackson County is under some sort of water, and some evacuations may need to happen near Rockford, Brownstown and Shields Town.

Meteorologists have already stated this flooding could be as bad as it was in May 1996.

Keep tuned to WBIW for updates as they come in, and see below for a list of flooded roads in the area.
