Mellencamp's Classmates To Honor Musician With Street Name

Last updated on Monday, March 3, 2008

(SEYMOUR) - John Mellencamp’s high school class wants his hometown of Seymour to name a street in his honor.

Seymour Mayor Craig Luedeman says the Seymour High School class of 1970 has yet to make a formal proposal, but he announced the idea in his state of the city address.

Mellencamp's classmates want to rename Community Drive to John Mellencamp Way in the city about halfway between Indianapolis and Louisville, Ky. The street runs in front of the high school.

Mellencamp was born in Seymour in 1951. He became one of the biggest stars of 1982 when his album ``American Fool'' sold more than 3 million copies. From it came two hit singles, ``Hurt So Good'' and ``Jack And Diane,'' which topped the Billboard Hot 100.
