(VINCENNES) - The Indiana Department of Transportation is issuing driving tips for motorists who find themselves in severe weather conditions.

With this week being Severe Weather Awareness Week, and also having a little bit of its own severe weather to go along with it, it's a good idea for drivers to start slowly moving into spring and summer driving mode as the winter tapers off.

When it comes to driving in a major thunderstorm, INDOT wants to make sure drivers turn on their headlights and slow down.

Good rule of thumb is if your wipers are on, your lights should be too.

If visibility gets too low, slow down or even pull over and stop to wait out the heavy rains and turn on your hazard lights, and if you do stop, stay in the car, that's the safest place to be if there's lightning.

One tip that may be most relevant for today is, during flooding, never drive through water if the road is not visible, and if a road is closed due to flooding, don't go through anyway.

That sign is there because your vehicle cannot physically cross.
