(BLOOMINGTON) - Well, it’s official. General Electric is packing its bags and heading out of Bloomington.
The GE refrigerator plant in Bloomington had a cloud cast over it in mid January when company officials declared their intention to mothball the factory that has sustained Bloomington families for decades.
They did offer one tiny ray of hope, in that they would entertain ideas for 60 days to keep the plant open by finding ways to recover its operating losses, which, they estimated were around $45 million.
This morning, that ray of hope was extinguished when company officials say the efforts were in vain, and that the operating losses just couldn't be recovered.
GE then said the Bloomington facility will close its doors for good at the end of 2009.
The plant, on the west side of the campus town, has been in operation building refrigerators for around 4 decades, and will put nearly 900 workers out of a job when they finally do close up shop.
GE earlier announced that the manufacturing capacity of the Bloomington plant could be transferred outside the country.
