Bloomington Trooper To Umpire Olympic Baseball Tournament

Last updated on Wednesday, March 5, 2008

(BLOOMINGTON) - Some people think it’s the job of the police to just call balls and strikes as they see them, and those people, especially if they live in and around Bloomington, may not know just how right they are.

Bloomington State Trooper Jim Jackson, who has been umpiring baseball games as a side gig since 1978, has been invited as one of only 2 American umpires to Taiwan for the Olympic Baseball Qualifying Tournament.

Jackson has been "umping" baseball games at all levels for high schools, college for the Big Ten, Big East and Missouri Valley Conference, and has even called a game or two for the Indianapolis Indians.

Jackson says that, when officiating a baseball game, despite what some may think, getting chewed out by a coach is worse then getting an earful on a traffic stop.
